We'll BTECing Away Some Great Memories

Image
Ramsgate gig 09/06/15 the Major Music Project was given to us just before spring break. Our entire class got divided up into two groups; one was to put on a gig at the college and one to collaborate with East Kent College to put on a gig in Margate. I was put into the group of Margate together with: Melissa, Alijah, Donte, Cody, Shaquille, Maria K, Junior, Erika, Deonne, Shaniece and Mykaela. During our first meeting, we came up with all the roles and divided them between everyone. Olly did point out that, just because you got assigned a role, didn't mean that you had to do it completely on your own. People still had to help one another but it meant that you had to keep all the information together ROLES AND ASSIGNED PEOPLE: -  Make an Equipment list for on the day of departure to make sure that all the equipment we needed was taken to Ramsgate and, more importantly, back to the college. This was done after confirming the tech spec with Alijah.  - Er...

JAZZ ARTICLES ON IMPROVISATION

Image
BLUE IN GREEN by Miles Davis and Bill Evans Bill Evans created a harmonic language that was a scalar (harmony based on scales) understanding of harmony, rather then chordal. The scale represents one harmonic moment. So, instead of the chords, the scale provides the notes that the piano uses while comping (however the piano/guitar player interprets the chords/scales). He represented it as thinking about different flavours/colours, altered modes, instead of thinking about chords. He executed this in one of his songs, called 'Blues in Green'. 'Blue in Green' is a Jazz ballad, characterised by the slow 4/4 time signature, brushes and harmonic movement, released in 1959, New York. It was written by Miles Davis and Bill Evans. The modes used in this track are D dorian and Lydian, alongside altered scales (add b9, #9, #5, b6, b7). The scales and modes provide the notes that the piano uses in the comping and that the soloists use. However, the piano player is interpreting ...

SOLO SET

PRE GIG EVALUATION Because the venue is quite small and intimate with a tiny stage, I have decided to do an acoustic set. I have asked two of my friends to play with me, one violinist and backing vocalist and one acoustic bass player. Both instruments can be DI'd so I would need three amps (one for my semi-acoustic guitar as well) and two microphones. I'm going to do four songs, three originals and one cover, all within the folk/country/pop genres: 1. Crazy I am starting off with this song, because I think it is my best original piece and it will hopefully trigger enough interest to hold the audience's attention throughout the rest of my set. In this song there will be vocals, backing vocals, violin, guitar and bass. 2. My Friends In this song my bass player is going to play guitar for me as I am not able to play the guitar and sing at the same time. It will only be vocals, backing vocals and guitar but the song is up beat and happy. I am doing this song second bec...

Censorship In Music

Image
VS.  Censorship is, even if we don't realise, affecting us every day of our lives. It controls what information we receive, the way we think and feel about certain matters and sets the ground for our morals. The definition of censorship is: '' The suppression or prohibition of any part of books, films, news, etc. that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security. '' - ( Oxforddictionaries.com, (n.d.). censorship - definition of censorship in English from the Oxford dictionary . [online] Available at: http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/censorship [Accessed 5 Mar. 2015]) . But who has the right to decide what is or is not acceptable, obscene or a threat to society? Even though we'd like to think that all the information given to us by the media is objectively true, the government controls a lot of what reaches us in the end. I think that in the long run, censorship has the power to form the ideals and value...

Elements Of A Score

Sir Duke – Stevie Wonder A: This is an 8 th note (quaver), which has it's name because in the Common time signature (4/) there is 8 quavers in a bar. This quaver is the note D. This piece is in the key of B major, so this note would normally be #D, but because of the ‘Natural’ sign in front of it, it becomes a D. the ‘Natural’ sign cancels out a # or a b and brings it back to the natural tones. B: Fm7 is an extended chord , which is the 4 th interval in the key of B. The chord is minor, which you know because of the little m behind the F. Usually a chord is a triad and has 3 notes, the 1 st , 3 rd   and 5 th degree of the scale, but because of the 7 at the end of this chord, you also play the 7 th degree of the scale. In the F major scale are these notes: F G A Bb C D E . I have highlighted the notes that would be played in this chord if it were a Major chord, but because it is minor, you have to flatten the 3 rd and the 7 th degree of the scale, which then makes ...

Music for Voices

- Ella Fitzgerald's version is in the key of C minor using an Aeolian scale. I suppose that the reason for using this key is because it fits the singer's range and as it is a vocal arrangement it makes sense to adjust the key to the singer. - There are lots of backing vocals in this arrangement, creating lots of harmonic layers, whom are not singing any words. The reason for this is because the main focus of this song is the lead singer and giving the harmonies a bigger part would take away that focus. Also, because the phrasing is quite fast due to the speed of the song and the melody line is very dynamic, with this amount of harmonies it would sound messy and it would clash. - There is only little instrumental accompaniment in this arrangement, piano and harp. Again, this is done because the main focus has to remain on the lead singer. Because there are already so many harmonies, with more instrumentation it would overpower the lead singer. -The piano is playing a counterm...

Business Plan

Image
Putting up a gig in a small venu e I would like to begin with explaining what my main goal would be. Of course, this would be much further within the process of this plan because at this moment I do not have the money or connections to make it succeed, but that is why I am setting up this business plan: Under ideal circumstances, I would run a well known events company specialising in music performance. My main idea would be that my roster would be divided in 4 colours and so 4 genres of music: -orange: folk, country -purple: electronic -blue: soul, blues -red: Jazz I would have found these artists by going to gigs and searching for the people who I think of fit the profile and by contacting people I already know in the music industry. On the other side, I would search for venues and decide what the most suiting colour for it would be, and propose to set up a gig, which I will explain in further detail later. Eventually, venues would be contacting me, asking for ...
