Music for Voices

- Ella Fitzgerald's version is in the key of C minor using an Aeolian scale. I suppose that the reason for using this key is because it fits the singer's range and as it is a vocal arrangement it makes sense to adjust the key to the singer. - There are lots of backing vocals in this arrangement, creating lots of harmonic layers, whom are not singing any words. The reason for this is because the main focus of this song is the lead singer and giving the harmonies a bigger part would take away that focus. Also, because the phrasing is quite fast due to the speed of the song and the melody line is very dynamic, with this amount of harmonies it would sound messy and it would clash. - There is only little instrumental accompaniment in this arrangement, piano and harp. Again, this is done because the main focus has to remain on the lead singer. Because there are already so many harmonies, with more instrumentation it would overpower the lead singer. -The piano is playing a counterm...
