Music for Voices

- Ella Fitzgerald's version is in the key of C minor using an Aeolian scale. I suppose that the reason for using this key is because it fits the singer's range and as it is a vocal arrangement it makes sense to adjust the key to the singer.
- There are lots of backing vocals in this arrangement, creating lots of harmonic layers, whom are not singing any words. The reason for this is because the main focus of this song is the lead singer and giving the harmonies a bigger part would take away that focus. Also, because the phrasing is quite fast due to the speed of the song and the melody line is very dynamic, with this amount of harmonies it would sound messy and it would clash.
- There is only little instrumental accompaniment in this arrangement, piano and harp. Again, this is done because the main focus has to remain on the lead singer. Because there are already so many harmonies, with more instrumentation it would overpower the lead singer.
-The piano is playing a countermelody as well as chords to make it melodicly more interesting. Without this counter melody, the main melody would be the only melodic part of this song and by adding a counter melody, it immediately makes it sound more complex, energetic, and dynamic.

- Kamelot their version is in the key of E minor with the Aeolian scale. The reason why they would choose for this key is because it's an instrumental arrangement and the E Aeolian scale only has one flat. This makes it a lot easier to play this song  and as there is no vocalists to consider, they could easily choose this key.
- there is lots going on in this song. They start off with a made up intro. The guitar is playing the main melody line and a second guitar is  playing power chords. There also is horn section, backing vocals, drums and strings. Within the strings there is harmonic layers, whom are playing very fast, short notes throughout most of the song, but they also provide melodic layers by playing countermelodies.. The song reminds me of the music score of a historic war film. The drums are playing a patriotic, almost heroic rhythm which enhance this feeling. The horn section is providing
-The genre of this arrangement is rock/metal and the speed is very fast, which is common for this style. This keeps it very energetic and I think by slowing it down you'd loose the energy. There is also no lyrics in this song so it makes it easier to speed it up.
- In the middle of this arrangement they strip all the instruments and the Choir starts singing. the entire feel of the song changes. They have done this to create dynamic within this arrangement and to make it musically more interesting.

- Sacred Rendition is in the key of F minor with the Aeolian scale. The reason for this key is because it is a male choir. This means the key needs to be low in order for all of them to be in range.
- There is only minimal accompaniment from the organ and the piccolo as it's all about the vocals. It would sound too messy to have more instruments because there is already so many harmonic difference within the song.
- It's very slow with long notes as it is a choral arrangement. Because a church is very echo-y, when you sing fast in short notes they will start overlapping each other and they will clash. This is why the arrangement is adjusted to avoid this.
- This song starts off being homophonic, as they are all following the same melody line but in different harmonies. Later on in the song, it becomes polyphonic as counter melodies start to join in. They have probably done this to make the song melodicly more interesting. It is already very slow with long notes and without these counter melodies it might get boring

The greatest love of all
- The arrangement is in a different key (original in Eb, arrangement in F). The reason they have changed the key, is because F is a lot easier to play in as it only has 1 flat instead of 3. Because this is a piano arrangement, they did not need to think about the vocalist's range and could easily change the key.
- The arrangement is simplified by getting rid of the chords and just having a melody line and bass notes. Again, this is done to make it easier for the player as they don't have to focus on more than 2 notes for one hand. It is also clearly set out, with one treble clef and one bass clef so that the player knows what notes to play with what hand
- The arrangement is in a different tempo. You can see that as in the original the first notes are semi quavers and in the arrangement they are quavers. This means that the arrangement is slower, which is again done to make it easier to play.
- In the arrangement there are signs beneath the notes which tell you when to play louder or softer (mp, mf, <) and accents on certain notes. This is done to create dynamics within the piece. It is often easier for beginners to have the signs there as if is quite difficult to create your own dynamics and that's why I think the signs are there.

what the world needs now
- The arrangement is in a different key (original is in G, arrangement in Eb). Because this song has
multiple vocal lines (soprano/alto/tenor/bass), they have adjusted the key so that all are in a suitable range for the singers.
- In the arrangement they have added an intro of 4 bars. I think this is mainly done so that the vocalists can hear the key and can get the right pitch. If they would come straight in, they might risk being out of tune, especially with two vocal lines. It can also be done to add a bit more dynamics to the piece and to make it more interesting.
- The texture of the piece is polyphonic, which means that the vocal lines are independent.
- The arrangement is very straight forward. It is not complex and the sheet music tells you exactly what you need to do (No own interpretation needed). They have probably made it like this because they wanted the sheet music to sell and make money off it rather than creating something that they would not want people to cover.
